Is He Worthy – Thursday Music

Today, a song written by a man named Andrew Peterson, sung by Shane and Shane, live with a choir. Scriptures to go along with this song are Revelation 5.1-14, 1 Corinthians 15.54-55, John 14.6, Hebrews 2.17, 2 Corinthians 5.17, and Revelation 21.5.

We start with a call and response,

Do you feel the world is broken?

(We do)

Do you feel the shadows deepen?

(We do)

But do you know that all the dark won’t stop the light from getting through?

(We do)

Do you wish that you could see it all made new?

(We do)

Is all creation groaning?

(It is)

Is a new creation coming?

(It is)

Is the glory of the Lord to be the light within our midst?

(It is)

Is it good that we remind ourselves of this?

(It is)

On writing the song, Mr. Peterson said,

“I wrote the verses with the call and response sections, and then I had no idea how to write the chorus. I thought about how this album is about the resurrection, and I remembered how in Revelation 5 this wonderful scene unfolds where John is looking around and realizing that nobody can be found worthy to break the seal and open the scroll and to ascend to the Throne. He is weeping loudly because there is nobody worthy to do this thing. He is told, “no behold there is someone Who is worthy.” I love how there also a question and answer section in the Bible, “Is there anyone worthy?” And the angels answer about the power of Jesus, “He is.””

The chorus is a triumphant declaration that Jesus is worthy to open the scroll, to enact God’s will for humanity, to put into play God’s master plan.

Is anyone worthy? Is anyone whole?

Is anyone able to break the seal and open the scroll?

The Lion of Judah who conquered the grave

He is David’s root and the Lamb who died to ransom the slave

From every people and tribe

Every nation and tongue

He has made us a kingdom and priests to God

To reign with the Son

Is He worthy? Is He worthy?

Of all blessing and honor and glory

Is He worthy? Is He worthy?

Is He worthy of this?

He is!

Is He worthy? Is He worthy?

He is!

He is!

It builds in emotion, it’s emotive, it’s poetic, and it describes what Jesus did for us. Our best defence against the forces of evil is to declare the message of songs like this; Jesus is worthy. Jesus is the Lamb of God who died to ransom us, to bring us into right relationship with God, to redeem us from the hold of sin.

Jesus has always been, is now, and always will be the way to God, the One who makes a way for us, the One who is worthy to sit on the throne of His Father and the One who is worthy to open the scroll of Revelation 5.
