Ephesians 2.4-7

But God, being rich in mercy, because of his great love with which he loved us, even though we were dead in offences, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you are saved!— and he raised us up together with him and seated us together with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, to demonstrate in the coming ages the surpassing wealth of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.”

(Ephesians 2.4-7, NET)

At their lowest point many people feel unlovable and beyond saving (vv.1-3). Into this despair reaches God, rich in mercy, because of His great love for you. Even though, we read, we were dead in offences (Romans 6.23) there is still the opportunity to be made…alive together with Christ.

When people are down they feel as if they don’t deserve loving.

People can feel that they don’t deserve anything good, but do deserve everything bad that is coming to them.

The love and the salvation that comes from God is, we read, by grace. This means that it starts with God, continues in God, and ends in God. This means that it is a gift that we don’t earn and yes, we don’t deserve. Whilst this is true, we receive it anyway.

From being dead in offences, from living a life that serves ourselves only and pays no attention to God or others we have the opportunity, by grace, to be raised…up together with [Jesus], from death to life.

For you and for me, this means that no matter how low we might be feeling, no matter how dead in offences we may be, there is always God, being rich in mercy who wants to  [make] us alive together with Christ. No, we don’t deserve it, but it is by grace [we] are saved!
