Colossians 2.6-7

“Therefore, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him and firm in your faith just as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.”

(Colossians 2.6-7)

I think we’ve all had points in our lives where we don’t feel firm in [our] faith. It might have been after bad news, challenging circumstances, or it could have been during a season when everything was going so well that your focus shifted entirely to yourself. It could, also, have been during a season of doubt.

Doubt comes up many times in Scripture and is handled differently according to the context (James 1.6-8, Isaiah 1.18, and Jude 1.22-23, for example). When doubt strikes we can run from it or we can lean into it. Doubt can take us far from our faith or it can make us search deeper into it.

Doubt, inherently, isn’t a bad thing. Doubt is human and doubt is universal, says Os Guinness. We live in a broken world and to doubt is sadly just a part of life.

Very simply, all that can be believed can be doubted, and it is no surprise then that our faith, the most holy faith that Jude has written about can be doubted. To doubt means to have two minds, and rather than suppress doubt, we should look into the questions we have in our minds. It will, somewhat counterintuitively, help us to stay firm in [our] faith.

Today, think of areas in your life where you feel fear, doubt, anxiety, stress, or trepidation. Are they in tension with what Jesus has already said? Most often in our lives we find that when we are stressed, worried, anxious, or doubting it will be in direct contradiction with something that Jesus has already said. Consider these examples as we move forward in faith today:

Are you worried about what your future will bring?

Read Matthew 6.24-34.

Are you stressed about making ends meet financially?

Read Philippians 4.19, Isaiah 58.11, and see the principle of Malachi 3.10.

Do you doubt whether God is real, loving, and good?

Read the book of Job.
